You don’t even have to jack the car up to do an oil change. (Worth mentioning those stains are the GTI’s fault.)
Also,this oil is going to be pretty upset when it finds out where it’s actually going.

It’s the same story with my smart! Literally, removing the oil filter is as easy as reaching under the rear bumper, then twisting off the can-shaped thing poking out of the engine. :D

meanwhile, I have memories of when the GM Iron Duke* had the oil filter in the oil pan. yep, there was a large threaded cover you would remove and then pull out the cartridge-style filter. Of course that meant oil went everywhere when you took the cover off. I was also told that the first year or two they did this, there was no traditional drain plug in the pan (never personally saw one.) Just a recipe for a goddamn mess.
* that’s the second mention I’ve made of the Iron Duke today. What the hell is going on?

The very last of the aircooled VWs sold in the U.S. were like that. No drain plug. You HAD to take the cover off to change the oil.

Yeah, that's not happening for me. I need like 3 feet under a car to do an oil change. My fat ass won't fit otherwise. Newer cars are a PITA to work on anyway, as you have all that damn plastic cladding underneath. Makes even jacking the car up a chore.

Believe it or not that race level protection is exactly why I bought the oil. What it really means is “high in ZDDP”, which is necessary for flat tappet engines, which are found both in race cars and Karmann Ghias

Jack-free oil changes are the best. I have longish arms and can stretch far enough under my E36 to reach the drain. The oil filter is then front and center under the hood. 10 minutes and done.

I know the lifters in my wasserboxer were super picky to oil type and weight - they liked to stick if they didn’t get the right stuff.

Pro tip: There is no correct oil
(I actually did use the wrong oil, but in the transmission, not the engine. Gotta fix that shit soon)

i used to use valvoline racing with extra Zddp. though some said vavloline had started to cut back after people were using it in new cars. Then switched to Brad Penn. every so often they have specials on amazon. (though other sources contradict and say valvoline has more.)
I dont know anymore.

I couldn’t find any hard ZDDP numbers, so I just figured that since it’s designed for flat tappets it’s going to have enough.
The Valvoline being cheaper may have also influenced my decision-making.

i’ve seen multiple studies and they all have different numbers. both are over 1000ppm, so after that the most important thing is proper valve adjustment.
